Halloween is traditionally the first thing that comes to mind when October arrives. But as we bid adieu to the summer and welcome fall in all its glory, Halloween is going to have to take a backseat to far more important matters at hand: Breast cancer awareness and blindness awareness.
And to kick it off is this year’s fourth annual Blue Water Babes “Race for a Cure Fish for a Cure” tournament starting today, Oct. 5 through Oct. 6
The tournament is comprised of female fishing teams coming together to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.
But this two-day event is not just fishing, there are prizes for the best cocktail concoctions, the best decorated boats and the best costumes.
It starts this evening with a party at the Square Grouper Tiki Bar in Jupiter, where in addition to purchasing raffle tickets and entering the best cocktail competition, men will be auctioned off. The “Cabana Boys” will then mate on the winning bidder’s boat Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, according to the event’s program.
In the first two years of doing the tournament, the Blue Water Babes raised $100,000, all of which was able to go to breast cancer charities. This year the nonprofits recipients of the money raised are Cancer Alliance and Hearing the Ovarian Cancer.
Another note-worthy event this weekend will be the “Beyond Blind Fest” held
in Abacoa on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012. The Beyond Blind Institute is nonprofit organization focused on empowering visually impaired individuals seeking equal opportunity in today’s society.
And the all-day festival will be Beyond Blind Institute’s first annual event.
The “Beyond Blind Fest” will begin at 7:30 a.m with a 5K Run/Walk. Afterward, the Health and Wellness Festival opens with a potpourri of activities: music, face painting and more. There will even be eye exams, nutrition tips, demonstrations from fitness instructors and dance teachers.
